Unlocking Talent
Beyond  the CV

For Employers

Military spouses represent a highly skilled, resilient, and adaptable talent pool. Yet many face significant barriers to employment, not because of a lack of capability, but because traditional recruitment processes often fail to recognise the value of their unique experiences.

The Beyond the CV campaign exists to change that.

We are working to raise awareness of the transferable skills, leadership qualities, and professional potential within the military spouse community while encouraging employers to look beyond career gaps, relocation history, and non-linear career paths.

Military spouses are often experienced professionals who have developed exceptional workplace skills through both their careers and the realities of military life.

Many have successfully navigated:

  • Frequent relocations

  • Career transitions

  • Remote and flexible working

  • Complex family responsibilities

  • Volunteering and community leadership roles

  • Professional development alongside changing circumstances

These experiences foster skills that employers consistently seek, including:

Adaptability

Thriving in change and new environments

Problem Solving

Finding solutions quickly in unfamiliar situations

Leadership

Supporting teams, driving outcomes and leading others

Resilience

Performing through uncertainty and challenger

Communication

Building relationships and collaborating across diverse groups

Organisation

Balancing priorities with efficiency and professionalism

The Challenge

Despite these strengths, military spouses often encounter barriers to employment.

Research and personal experiences consistently highlight concerns around:

  • Employment gaps

  • Frequent changes in location

  • Perceived lack of career progression

  • Difficulties maintaining continuous employment

  • Limited access to flexible opportunities

For many employers, these factors can unintentionally overshadow the significant skills and experience a candidate brings.

At Beyond the CV, we believe recruitment should focus on capability, potential, and performance—not simply chronology.

What can you do?

  • Look beyond career gaps

  • Value transferable skills

  • Support flexible working

  • Challenge recruitment bias

  • Create opportunities

By supporting Beyond the CV, your organisation can play a role in creating meaningful employment opportunities for military spouses while gaining access to an often over-looked source of exceptional talent.

Together, we can ensure that skills, potential, and capability are recognised for what they truly are - not limited by what happens to appear on a CV.

Our goal is simple.

To help employers recognise the talent behind the CV.
